Tritons lose twice to Kirkwood

The Iowa Central softball team was swept by No. 6 (NJCAA Div. II) Kirkwood here Sunday at Rogers Sports Complex.

After dropping a heartbreaking 6-5 decision in the opener, the Tritons (24-16 overall, 6-10 in the ICCAC) suffered a 19-1 five-inning setback in the nightcap.

“We were one pitch away from winning the first game,” said ICCC head coach Rick Sandquist. “We scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to go ahead 5-3 after they tied it. They ended up hitting a two-run triple to go ahead. Lexi Korte pitched fantastic for us. Our girls were crushed afterwards. We don’t go for moral victories, but we played our hearts out. Our energy level was really good.”

Sami Koontz and Molly Matthes (Fort Dodge) each contributed two hits for Iowa Central in Game 1, while Kristen Keen added a double.

In the second contest, Koontz recorded two more hits. The Eagles (37-4, 15-1) pulled away with 15 runs in the first two frames.

“Kirkwood might be the top hitting team in the country,” Sandquist said. They have a couple girls (Taylor Nearad and Gabby Carter) with 16 homers.”

Looking to snap a mini four-game slide, Iowa Central visits Southwestern (18-13, 8-8) on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. in Creston. The Tritons are 2-1 against the Spartans this season.
