Tritons split in Kansas

CLOUD COUNTY, Kan. – The Iowa Central softball squad scored a dramatic victory over Cloud County here Sunday before running into trouble against Highland.

The Tritons (8-3 overall) plated two runs in the top of the 10th inning to defeat the hosts, 7-5. St. Edmond graduate Amanda Lansman earned the win in relief of Fort Dodge Senior High grad Cassie Tjebben. The duo scattered four hits in 10 innings of work.

Makayla Burt went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI. Sami Koontz added three hits in the victory.

”The first game was great,” ICCC head coach Rick Sandquist said. ”We didn’t have any errors, and Cassie and Amanda both did a nice job of working their way out of some jams. It was a good win. I’ve said all along this is a resilient group, and they showed it here.”

Ace pitcher Lexi Korte was injured on an infield fly ball collision in the Highland contest, and Iowa Central never recovered, dropping a 19-1 decision.

Burt homered for the lone Triton run and hit.

”It was just one of those games that got away from us in a hurry,” Sandquist said. ”Things started to snowball and we just couldn’t recover.”

Iowa Central returns to action Sunday in Cocoa Beach, Fla., with two games against Northeast Florida beginning at 11 a.m.
