JEFFERSON - A strong start was enough for South Central Calhoun here Friday, as the Titans posted a 12-6 season-opening win over Greene County.
Two touchdowns in the first three-plus minutes of the first quarter had South Central Calhoun off and running. Senior Jeff King scored on a 19-yard touchdown run with 10:17 left in the opening period, and moments later, Derrick Henkenius returned an interception 65 yards to paydirt.
The Rams got on the board with a score at the 6:39 mark in the fourth quarter, and got the ball back with a little over two minutes remaining. SCC forced a turnover on downs, though, to seal the victory.
Junior Rylan Richardson recorded 10 solo tackles and eight assisted to pace the Titans defensively. Richardson also forced a fumble and tacked on a sack.
Zayne Barrett and King were the other leading defenders for SCC, a Class 1A program that heads to East Sac County (2A) this Friday. Greene County is in 3A.
