PERRY - Things didn't go as scripted for the St. Edmond volleyball team in its 2014 debut Thursday night.
The Gaels (0-1 overall) were swept by Perry in three games by scores of 26-24, 25-18 and 25-18.
"It felt good to finally get to put all our hard work to the test," said SEHS head coach Dee Huss. "We did a nice job in every set of battling and keeping the score tight. Unfortunately, every set we either let them back in it or let them pull away with one run of four to five points. Without that run, each set could have had a different outcome."
Madeline Baldwin finished a perfect 14-for-14 serving with six aces for St. Edmond. Anna Yung also went 10 of 11 from the service line, while Jill Salinas was 6-for-6.
"I thought our libero Jill Salinas did a really nice job on defense as well as serve-receive," Huss said. "We will need that consistency from her so our front row can run their offense. I saw a lot of good things (Thursday), and we will keep working on the little things in practice."
The Gael junior varsity also fell short (25-18, 21-25 and 15-4). while the SEHS freshman squad prevailed by scores of 26-24 and 25-20.
St. Edmond returns to action Saturday, hosting its own invitational. Start time is set for 8:30 a.m.
