HUMBOLDT - The St. Edmond baseball team nearly pulled itself out of big hole on Wednesday night, but they weren't able to overcome Humboldt's early advantage.
The Wildcats picked up a 9-6 North Central Conference victory after building a 9-0 lead.
Humboldt (20-5 overall) scored five runs in the first and added four more in the third for the big advantage. The Gaels (14-15) plated three runs in the fourth and three runs in the sixth.
"After getting down 9-0, we didn't roll over,'' said St. Edmond head coach Joe Shanks. "I thought we were dead in the water, but we caught fire and it was really good to see.
"It showed that these guys have a lot of character.''
Chris Witzke and Brenden Schnell had two hits each for the Wildcats. Schnell had a double and a home run and drove in five runs.

St. Edmond will face the winner of the Manson Northwest Webster and South Central Calhoun contest.
