Graettinger Firefighters cordon off the scene of Monday's fatal house fire that claimed the lives of two brothers in the northern Palo Alto County community. Gavin Hasbrouck, 5, and Collin Reed, 7, were both pronounced dead at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg after being carried out of the house in the arms of firefighters.
Stephanie Gaston, 27, an occupant of the house, was able to exit, but was unable to bring her children, Hasbrouck and Reed, to safety. Members of the Graettinger Fire Department entered the smoke-filled house and were able to locate and remove the two children, at which point firefighters and Palo Alto County ambulance personnel began lifesaving measures.
Gaston, Hasbrouck and Reed were transported to Palo Alto County Hospital. Gaston was later transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Her condition was not released Monday.
Preliminary investigation indicates the fire started in the living room of the house. The Iowa State Fire Marshal's office will continue to investigate the fire.
