IOWA CITY - Lily Peterson made her state tennis debut here Thursday.
St. Edmond's sophomore dropped both of her Class 1A singles matches at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.
In her opener, Peterson fell to LeMars' Emily Ahlers by scores of 6-1 and 6-2. Peterson then came up short against Paige Vannausdle of Red Oak in the consolation first round, 6-0, 6-2.
"Both matches were pretty close despite the set scores," said SEHS head coach Leah Applebee. "(Lily) played very well, trying different tactics and gaining valuable experience for next year in order to come back stronger."
Peterson finished her season 3-11 overall. She actually entered the regional tournament without a varsity win, but she reeled off three victories to eventually advance to state as an alternate after the runner-up bowed out.
"As her coach, I was very proud to see her fight so well until the very end," Applebee said. "I'm excited for next year."
