DES MOINES - Saturday's sprint medley relay featured a passing of the torch for the Fort Dodge girls track team.
The Dodger quartet of freshman Shariah Smith, freshman Car'Maiya Mosley, senior Tiana Mericle and senior Lexi Astor settled for 19th in the Class 4A field with a time of 1:53.56. Entering the state meet, FDSH was seeded 14th.
"We ran the fastest that we ever have," said Fort Dodge head coach Todd Constable. "It's just tough to win (the sprint medley) when you don't have a quarter-miler at 57 or 58 (seconds). This was a great experience, though, for our younger kids to show them what it takes. We're happy we got down (to Drake Stadium), but we're still not satisfied. We're tired of just coming to state and competing."

On Friday, the Dodger 4x100 of Smith, Mosley, Astor and Mericle also finished ninth in the prelims with a new school record of 49.52. Last month, that same foursome placed seventh at the Drake Relays after establishing a then-program mark in the prelims.
"Losing Lexi and Tiana is really going to hurt us," Constable said. "Both of those kids have shown great senior leadership this season. It's just one of those things that you hope the young kids get motivated even more to get back next year."
Cedar Rapids Jefferson (1:45.94) claimed the 4A sprint medley title on Saturday.
Pleasant Valley (82.5) and Urbandale (73.5) led the way in the 4A team race.
Attendance yesterday was announced at 8,744, upping the three-day total to 35,149.
