Elvis Barclay, left, dodges backwards under a high kick by Julia DaSilva as they demonstrate the Brazilian art of Capoeira at the Festival of Nations Sunday afternoon. The celebration of world cultures at Iowa Central Community College featured other demonstrations like dancing and Tae Kwon Do.
DaSilva said Capoeira was created in Africa but spread out and became popular in Brazil. It’s a martial art with elements of rhythm and dance, set to music, and was used by slaves both to blow off steam after a hard day and to learn self-defense, she said.
