ROCKWELL CITY - Corey Trott's trial has been taken off the calendar pending the results of a competency evaluation.
Trott, 33, of Rockwell City, was scheduled to stand trial beginning April 21. However, Judge Thomas Bice ruled on Thursday that trial has been suspended until a competency hearing ordered for Trott is completed.
Trott is facing a first-degree murder charge in connection with the shooting death of Rockwell City Police Officer Jamie Buenting on Sept. 13, 2013.
Buenting was killed during a standoff in which Trott refused to come out of the home at 502 Pleasant St. in Rockwell City. Trott allegedly fired one gunshot which hit Buenting, who was pronounced dead at Stewart Memorial Community Hospital in Lake City.
Trott, who has pleaded not guilty, will undergo a psychiatric competency evaluation after it was determined that his mental state prevents him from fully understanding the charge and defending himself.
