DES MOINES - Newell-Fonda has made a habit out of reaching the state tournament.
In its 10th overall trip, the Mustang girls are hoping to make yet another appearance in the championship round.
No. 1 Newell-Fonda (23-2 overall) is in the semifinal round for the eighth time, and head coach Dick Jungers' squad is looking for its fifth berth in the title game.
The Mustangs will face No. 4 Colo-Nesco (24-1) in the Class 1A semifinals here tonight. The contest will tip at 8:30 p.m. inside Wells Fargo Arena.
In their six semifinal appearances, the Mustangs have averaged 62.5 points scored while allowing 54.6. In their four victories, they've outscored their opponents by an average of 15.3 points.
The winner of this contest will play either Janesville (24-1) or Burlington Notre Dame (22-3) for the 1A crown on Friday at 6 p.m.
The Mustangs rolled to a 73-37 victory in the quarterfinals against Bedford. Newell-Fonda senior Renee Maneman tied a state tourney record with 13 assists, and had 13 points to go along with seven steals and six rebounds.
Claudia Larsen, who will join Maneman at Northwestern College next season, led the Mustangs with 16 points. Brianna Wells chipped in 10.
Colo-Nesco squeaked out a 38-34 victory over Lynnville-Sully in their tournament opener. Caitlyn Reese led the Royals with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Reese entered the contest averaging 15 points a contest.
Shayla Dean is averaging 13.1 a contest for Colo-Nesco.
Maneman, a first team all-stater last year, averages 15.3 a game. Larsen is scoring 12.6 a clip.
