DENISON - Second-ranked Newell-Fonda will be back at state for the ninth time in school history.
The Mustangs (24-0 overall) defeated Ar-We-Va 66-52 to advance to state.
"It was a great effort by everyone,'' said Newell-Fonda head coach Paul Loos. "We did a lot of things wrong defensively in the first half.
"Ar-We-Va took advantage of those mistakes and made many of their wide open shots."
After a 15-15 tie in the first period, Ar-We-Va outscored the Mustangs 27-13 in the third period.
It was a complete turn around in the second half, as the Mustangs held Ar-We-Va to 10 points in the final 16 mintues. Six in the third and four in the fourth, outscoring them 38-10 in the second half.
"In the second half our defense was stellar and we took those open looks away,'' Loos said. "We forced them into turnovers to create transition baskets to cut into their 14-point lead.
"We eventually took the lead for good in the third.''
Dalton Anderson led the Mustangs with 24 points on 11 of 15 shooting.
Brady Dicks had 17 points.
Mason?Scheidegger (8) Brady Bohe (7), Adam?Mullen (6) and Dillon Anderson (5) were also key contributors.
Gabe Podraza and Connor Wolterman had two each.
The rest of the Class 1A tournament field will be filled tonight in substate final action.
