McCartney — 80 years old

John S. McCartney, of Fort Dodge, will celebrate his 80th birthday with an open house from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Vincent House, 824 Third Ave. S.

His family includes wife Beverly; Kim and Mark Spencer, Valley Center, Kan.; Jim and Tammy McCartney, Davenport; and Kevin and Corinna McCartney, Fort Dodge. He has five grandchildren.
McCartney was born March 3, 1934, in Jameson, Mo. He has a bachelor’s degree from Central Methodist University, Fayette, Mo., a master’s degree from Truman University, Kirksville, Mo., and did post-graduate work at the University of Northern Colorado and University of Iowa. He was director of bands at Iowa Central Community College for 22 years, retiring in 1995. He was band director for nine years in Lamoni, six years in Shelbyville, Mo., and one year in Polo, Mo. He also served two years in the 3rd Infantry Division Army Band in Wurzburg, Germany. He has played alto saxaphone for the Karl King Municipal Band since 1974. He works at Iowa Realty, Fort Dodge.
