Eight Fort Dodge Middle School students selected as members of the 2014 Karl King Honor Bands performed Jan. 18.
Students representing Fort Dodge Middle School were:
Sixth-graders: Beth Jondle, flute; Taylor Smith, clarinet; and Jonathon Madden, baritone.
Seventh-graders: Kayla Smith, clarinet; Ben Gardner, bassoon; Kacee Gollob, trumpet; Keziah Henkelman, trombone; and Austin Andrews, tuba,
Both the sixth- and seventh-grade honor bands consisted of 110 members. Students were nominated by their directors and selected by a committee from the hosting school. They received their music in December to practice and learn on their own during band lessons. The honor bands spent only four and half hours practicing as full bands on the concert day.
"The honor band experience is valuable for our students because it provides a non-competitive experience with students from other schools," Tara Smith, FDMS band instructor, said. "They learn that with hard work and focus a lot can be accomplished in a short amount of time. I was proud of how our kids performed."
