DOT: Work on Centennial Bridge behind schedule

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — An Illinois Department of Transportation official says work on a major bridge linking the Quad Cities is behind schedule.

A project implementation engineer with the department tells the Quad-City Times ( ) that crews have struggled to replace beams on the Centennial Bridge. He says it's possible the bridge's reopening could be delayed.

The bridge links Davenport, Iowa, and Rock Island, Illinois. It closed this month for repairs and was scheduled to reopen by Sept. 6.

The Illinois Department of Transportation says the closure was needed to replace expansion joints and beams across the width of the bridge. Crews have been working on the bridge since June as part of the $3.35 million project, which includes concrete repairs to several piers and the deck.
