CEDAR RAPIDS - The Fort Dodge wrestling team will see a handful of new foes today at the Cedar Rapids Jefferson J-Hawk Invitational.
Action begins at 10 a.m., with finals scheduled for 4 p.m.
Joining the Dodgers will be Boone, Clinton, Oskaloosa, Benton Community, Muscatine, Fort Madison, No. 5 (Class 2A) West Delaware, Johnston, top-ranked (1A) Alburnett, Dubuque Hempstead, Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson, Waterloo East and Lake Forest (Ill.)
It's been a week since Fort Dodge has hit the mats, as they competed last Saturday in Ames at the Mendenhall Invitational.
"Anything out of the routine can be an issue, but I think are kids are ready to get out on the mat," FDSH head coach Bobby Thompson said. "I've seen some eager faces in the practice room."
Leading the Dodgers is a handful of ranked individuals, including Triston Lara (No. 4, 106 pounds), Erik Birnbaum (No. 5, 113), Jonah Egli (No. 9, 152) and Sam Cook (No. 6, 182).
Lara, a freshman, has earned four invite titles this year. He is now 25-1 overall.
"There are a couple of really deep weights, including 106 and 113," Thompson said. "Alburnett, West Delaware and Cedar Rapids Jefferson will all be tough."
Alburnett boasts six ranked individuals, including No. 2 Zach Fowler at 113, second-rated Hunter Washburn at 132 and top-ranked Dylan Windfield at 170.
The host J-Hawks are led by No. 1 Brenden Baker at 106 pounds in 3A.
Johnston, which Fort Dodge faced in a dual earlier this year, is led by No. 1 Henry Pohlmeyer at 113.
"We get to see some really talented smaller schools, and some other bigger ones that are new faces for us," Thompson said. "That's why we like to come down to this tournament."
