POCAHONTAS A metal teepee to be placed near the Pocahontas statue and a set of hydraulic rescue tools are among the items to be paid for with grants awarded Wednesday.

Leaders of the Pocahontas County Foundation announced 30 grants during the organization's annual meeting Wednesday at the Rialto Theater in Pocahontas. About 65 people attended the event, which was held in conjunction with the Pocahontas County Economic Development Commission.

A $10,000 award to the Pocahontas Hometown Pride Committee will help to pay for the teepee. Pocahontas Mayor Dick Gruber displayed an artist's rendition of the teepee, which would serve as a picnic shelter, standing just behind the statue. That statue is located along Iowa Highway 3 at the eastern border of the city.

Another $10,000 grant was awarded to the Pocahontas Fire Department to help it pay for a set of hydraulic rescue tools used to free people from wrecked vehicles.

The theater that was the site of the presentation ceremony will also benefit from a grant. The foundation awarded $9,787 to pay for acoustical panels and speakers.
