Triton women win big

January 15, 2014
By DANA BECKER sports@messengernews.net

At this point in the season, Craig Carlson will take a win for his No. 12 (NJCAA, Div. II) Iowa Central women no matter how "ugly" it comes.

While the scoreboard read a convincing 73-35 victory for the Tritons Wednesday night inside Hodges Fieldhouse, Carlson was left shaking his head in disgust at the shooting performance he saw his squad had.

"I've never had a team shoot the ball that terrible before," said Carlson, who has spent the last eight-plus years directing Iowa Central. "We were missing wide-open three-pointers, uncontested layups, open looks; nothing was falling, yet, we found a way to get a 38-point victory.

"I'll take it, but this kind of night won't help us win games going forward."

Miliakere Koyamainavure posted a game-high 19 points, grabbing eight rebounds, dishing out three assists and swiping three steals. The Triton sophomore was playing before her brother, Mataika, took the court for the Southwestern men.

"I know Mili was excited to be playing in front of her brother," said Carlson, of the Fiji native. "You could tell she wanted to have a big game. And, she did, but that was an awful quiet 19 points from her."

Lydia Harvey added 13, but was just 5 of 19 from the field - including 3-for-12 beyond the arc. As a team, the Tritons (15-2 overall, 4-1 in ICCAC) were 7 of 36 on three-pointers and 26-for-75 from the floor.

Theresa Doyle chipped in five assists and four boards, while Katie Dentlinger had nine points and seven rebounds. Iowa Central held a commanding 55-41 advantage on the glass over the Spartans (3-13, 1-4).

"Our defensive effort was great," Carlson said. "I think that the way we had to defend for 20-to-25 seconds on each possession really hampered our offense because we were working so hard on the defensive end of the floor."

Between the end of the first half and start of the second, the Tritons used a 40-9 run to build themselves a commanding 52-19 lead. They never trailed in the game.

Iowa Central has now won six in a row and is a perfect 9-0 at home. Over the past three-plus years, the Tritons are 34-5 inside Hodges Fieldhouse.

Next up for Iowa Central is Ellsworth (6-10, 1-3) in Iowa Falls this Saturday. Tip is set for 1 p.m. The Panthers lost to Des Moines Area last night, 71-54.
