DAVID THOMAS

David L. Thomas, 49, formerly of Fort Dodge, passed away January 5, 2014, after a 22-year battle with heart failure.

Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, January 13, at Gunderson Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 14, at First Presbyterian Church in Fort Dodge. Burial will be at North Lawn Cemetery.

Dave was born August 17, 1964, to Howard and Merna (Reicks) Thomas. He graduated from Northwest Webster High School in Barnum in 1982. On May 9, 1987, he was united in marriage to Karen Hokinson at First Presbyterian Church. Dave and Karen spent most of their married life in Arizona. The last 10 years Dave focused his career on cardiac ultrasound. He could relate to others' struggles and through his generosity and desire to always put people before himself, was an inspiration to many.

Dave was a man of many talents and ambitions. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, going to the shooting range, antiques, 4-wheeling, radio-controlled airplanes, and car restoration. One of Dave's recent passions was learning to play the guitar. Most of all, Dave loved helping others, especially if it meant an opportunity to help them with projects. He also treasured spending time with his family and friends.

David is survived by his wife Karen; daughter Taeya; parents, Howard and Merna Thomas, Fort Dodge; sister Sherri (Steve) Lauritsen; brother Tim (Kim) Thomas; brothers-in-law, Curt (Sandy) Hokinson and Ron (Ann) Hokinson; and Dave was also a proud uncle to several nieces and nephews. Dave was preceded in death by his grandparents, Harley and Mabel Thomas and Tony and Leone Reicks; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Carl and Norma Hokinson, three uncles, one aunt and several cousins.

Memorials will be directed to Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix where Dave received impeccable care.
