MANSON - The top-ranked (Class 1A) Newell-Fonda girls rallied for a 53-42 victory over No. 3 (2A) Manson Northwest Webster on Friday night.
Renee Maneman tallied 23 points for the defending state runner-up Mustangs (7-0 overall, 2-0 in the Twin Lakes Conference), while Claudia Larsen chipped in 14. Newell-Fonda went 25-for-27 from the free throw line.
"It was a great game for both teams in a great atmosphere," said N-F head coach Dick Jungers. "We were able to play great defense to limit their number of looks.
"Offensively, I was pleased with our ball movement and our ability to make plays. We did the little things well to help us come out on top."
Ellie Herzberg, a University of Northern Iowa commit, led the way for the Cougars (6-1, 1-1) with a game-high 25 points. MNW was outscored 20-9 in the fourth quarter.
"Ellie Herzberg is better than advertised," Jungers said. "Her great speed to go with her scoring ability makes her a tough player to match up with."
