Record day for Tritons

December 14, 2013
By JOHN McBRIDE sports@messengernews.net

Iowa Central women's basketball coach Craig Carlson was anxious to see how his team would respond after a tough loss on Wednesday night. He was impressed with that response.

The No. 14 Tritons (10-2 overall, 1-1 in ICCAC) bounced back from Wednesday's loss to Kirkwood with a record-setting 113-70 rout of Marshalltown at Hodges Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon.

Iowa Central set a school record for points in a game, eclipsing the old mark of 111 against Minneapolis Community College in 2007. The Tritons also established a new record for points in a half, netting 66 points after intermission.

"This was huge for us," said Carlson, whose team actually moved up three spots in the latest ratings after its 85-78 loss to No 2 Kirkwood. "We needed this win. This was definitely a good bounce-back game."

The Tigers came into the game with a 10-1 record and had received votes in the latest national rankings. The Tritons wasted little time making sure the visitors were in for a long day, racing to a double-figure lead less than six minutes into the game.

"We wanted to win that first five minutes," said Carlson. "We had been struggling to start games recently so I am really pleased with that. I told the kids we can't keep coming out starting games like that."
