Man dies at FDCF; foul play not suspected

An inmate serving a life sentence at the Fort Dodge Correctional Facility died Thursday night after being found unconscious.

Dennis Lass, 73, was found unresponsive in the living unit restroom.

According to Fred Scaletta, a spokesman for the Iowa Department of Corrections, Lass was found at 9:39 p.m., and responding officers and medical personnel immediately began performing CPR on him. An ambulance from Trinity Regional Medical Center arrived at 9:43 p.m. and transported him to the hospital at 10:02 p.m.

He was pronounced dead at the hospital at 10:15 p.m.

Scaletta said there are no indications of foul play, but the official cause of death won't be determined until an autopsy is performed.

Lass was serving a life sentence for a 1973 first-degree murder conviction in Marshall County.

Clark facing meth possession charge

A Fort Dodge man has been charged with possessing methamphetamine with the intent of delivering it.

Thomas L. Clark Jr., 44, of Fort Dodge, is facing one count of possession with intent to deliver over five grams of methamphetamine and one count of failure to affix drug tax stamp. Both are felony charges.

According to the criminal complaint, investigators conducted a search warrant at 1660 8 1/2 Ave. N. Friday morning where they discovered Clark had over five grams of "a white crystal substance which field tested positive for methamphetamine." The complaint went on to say that Clark had "numerous other items that are consistent" with the sale and distribution of meth.

Clark also allegedly didn't have a proper stamp or label while possessing seven or more grams of a taxable substance.

He appeared in Webster County Magistrate Court Friday morning. Magistrate Steve Kersten ordered Clark held on $100,000 bond on the possession with intent to deliver charge, and $5,000 on the failure to affix drug tax stamp charge.

Clark's preliminary hearing on both charges will be Dec. 20.
