Gains continued to be made by the St. Edmond wrestling team here Thursday night.

In just their third outing of the young season, the Gaels (1-2 overall, 1-2 in the NCC) split a North Central Conference home triangular with Iowa Falls-Alden and Webster City.

After edging the Cadets by a 42-36 final, SEHS suffered a 45-33 setback to the Lynx. Webster City cruised to a 69-12 victory over Iowa Falls-Alden in the other dual of the evening.

St. Edmond's Ryan Szalat squares off with Steffen Chambers of Webster City on Thursday.

"I thought we came out a little flat and sluggish against Iowa Falls, but were still able to battle through it," St. Edmond head coach Tanner Utley said. "I liked the way we finished up, though, against Webster City.

"We wrestled hard for a full six minutes, which is what we need to do. We still have a long way to go, but we're probably about where we expected to be at this point in the year."

Sophomore Payton Sitzmann (126), freshman Connor Allison (132), top-ranked (Class 1A) senior Vinnie Harvey (220), No. 3 junior Ryan Szalat (113) and third-ranked senior Kaden McClintock (120) all earned a pair of triumphs for the Gaels. Szalat actually registered two falls, while Harvey delivered a pin and a technical fall. McClintock added a fall and a major decision, and Sitzmann and Allison each prevailed by a forfeit and a pin.

"Vinnie continues to dominate," said Utley. "He's just a hammer that knows what he wants. It was good for him to finally wrestle a full match (last night) and get some more mat time.

"Connor Allison also stepped up and won a big match for us against Webster City."

Other SEHS wins came from juniors Daman Perry (138) and Nick Hindt (182) and freshman Cole Allison (106). Hindt and Cole Allison both notched falls.

Against the Cadets, the Gaels jumped out to an early 18-0 lead following three straight forfeits. Iowa Falls-Alden then took the next four bouts, however, St. Edmond sealed the deal with a first period pin from McClintock.

For the Lynx (3-0, 3-0), Ryan Ferrari (138), Jacob Powers (145), Brandon Jessen (152), Alex Oswald (160), fourth-ranked (2A) Connor Larson (170), Brandon Patton (182), No. 5 Dylan Fielder (195) and Gavin Dinsdale (285) all came out on top twice. Securing one victory apiece were Gage Sadler (132), Gus Gasca (220), Freddie Seeley (120) and Ty Schnathorst (126).

Webster City claimed the first 10 matches over Iowa Falls-Alden, while opening with seven consecutive wins against St. Edmond.

"We scored our big points where we needed to," WCHS head coach Ted Larson said. "We knew St. Edmond would be strong at the bottom (weights), and that's where we're green right now.

"I did like the fight our younger kids showed. We had four guys that were out due to sickness, but we're fortunate that we have enough depth to make up for that. Meets like this are all stairsteps to where we want to be at the end of the year."

Next outing for the Gaels is Saturday at the Emmetsburg Invitational. The Lynx also return to the mat that same day, hosting their own Dick Kennedy Memorial Duals.
