AMES - Lois Mae Martin Macken, 84, of Iowa City and formerly of Ames, died Monday, December 9, 2013 while a patient at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Funeral services will be Monday, December 16, 2013 at 10 AM at First Baptist Church, 200 Lynn St in Ames with burial to follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Manson, Iowa. The family will receive friends at Stevens Memorial Chapel, 607 28th St. in Ames on Sunday, December 15, 2013 from 4 to 7 PM.
Lois was born on March 22, 1929 on the family farm near Fort Dodge; the daughter of Clarence and Wilda King Martin. Lois graduated from Fort Dodge High School in 1947 and married Robert R. Macken on December 22, 1946 in Fort Dodge. She worked at Hach Companies in Ames until her retirement in 1986. She was a member of First Baptist Church and Eastern Star. Lois was a master gardener and also associated with the Iowa Arboretum and Reiman Gardens.
Lois is survived by her son, Dean (Lois) Macken of Solon; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy (Art) Ferkin California. She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Linda Shelgren; and two sisters, Jean McGuire and Dolores Martin.
