ALGONA - The Algona chapter of Compassionate Friends will join in the Worldwide Candle Lighting at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 8 at First Lutheran Church, 226 N. Putnam St., Algona.

There will be a short program and a light snack after the event. There is no cost, and participants are welcome to bring a photo or memento of their child.

For more information, call 538-0572.

The Worldwide Candle Lighting began in 1997 and is held ever year on the second Sunday in December. It unites families and friends around the world as they light candles for one hour to honor and remember the children who have died at any age from any cause.

As candles are lit at 7 p.m. local time, it creates a virtual 24-hour wave of light as it moves from time zone to time zone, transcending all ethnic, cultural and religious boundaries.
