Man allegedly buys pistol for teen

SAC CITY - An Ida Grove man is facing a felony charge after allegedly buying a gun for a 16-year-old from Sac City.

Ethan Hartmann, 23, of Ida Grove, is facing charges of giving false information when acquiring a weapon, aiding and abetting a 16-year-old carrying a weapon and giving possession of a pistol to a person under twenty-one.

According to Sac City Police Chief John Thomsen, officers received a report of a 16-year-old with a pistol on Nov. 19. When officers searched the teen's car, they found a .40 caliber pistol and a male deer that was untagged. Police took custody of the gun and the deer was given to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

Thomsen said the investigation found that Hartmann bought the pistol for the teenager on Nov. 5.

"Hartmann was able to purchase the pistol as the ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms) firearms transaction record for over-the-counter sales was falsified," Thomsen said in a statement.

The 16-year-old is also facing charges of carrying a weapon and aiding and abetting giving possession of a pistol to a person under twenty-one. He will be tried as a juvenile in the case.
