The YWCA will be rolling out the red carpet at its annual fundraiser this year.

The Silver Screen Showcase gala will begin at 6:30 p.m. Saturday and will feature movie-themed live auction items.

"We thought it was a fun way to bring all our donations together," said Sally Kraayenbrink, committee chair. "The committee has had a fun time fitting the generous donations we've received to a well-known movie title.

Shari Burke makes a few adjustments to the tree decorations that will be part of the Silver Screen Showcase that supports the YWCA. The annual event will be held in the lobby of the Wahkonsa Building.

"Our premier live auction item, we've put under the title of 'The Blue Lagoon,'" she said. It includes a three-night stay at the Majestic Colonial Punta Cana Beach Resort in the Dominican Republic along with $1,000 in airfare.

Another called "Pretty Women" is a getaway weekend to Des Moines including shopping, shows and entertainment. "What Women Want" is a full day of beauty at La'James including a full body massage, mud therapy wrap, salt glow, facial, manicure, and pedicure. "Thelma and Louise" includes new tires from Graham Tire and a complete car detail at Fort Dodge Ford Lincoln Toyota.

For the second year, the event will be held at the Wahkonsa Building lobby.

"We are again excited this year about our venue," Kraayenbrink said. "Last year we felt it brought a sense of nostalgia for the longtime residents of Fort Dodge. Many of those who attended reflected back on the time when the Wahkonsa was a social hub in Fort Dodge. Many shared memories of past events they had attended. I was told many proms and high school activities were held at the Wahkonsa."

The historic hotel, built in 1910, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2008, and the lobby area has recently been renovated, she said.

The showcase is a great opportunity to gather downtown and enjoy the sight and sounds of the season, she said. It's also a great way to raise funds for a very worthy cause.

"We've had wonderful support," Kraayenbrink added. "This is our largest fundraiser of the year, and we are just so appreciative of the support from the community."

The YWCA is currently in a state of transition as it adds new services to those it traditionally offered. It provides a homeless shelter and transitional housing for women and children.

"Right now we offer long-term residential treatment services, substance treatment services - and that includes residential, outpatient, halfway house," she said. "We're moving into also providing services, not only female but also male outpatient treatment services."
