The Southeast Webster Grand mock trial team competed Nov. 7 at the regional event in Mason City. The team placed first out of 18 teams there and earned a berth to the state tournament. The team has been practicing for the competition since the last week of August.
Team members include Claire Whalen, Ebony Scott, Eliza Geis, Jace Marquart, Wes Clausen, Alanna McFarland, Kate Wickwire, Cassidy Lambert, Paige Garcia, Xavier Nichols, and Morgan Sorenson.
To participate in mock trial, a team must have a minimum of seven members who argue a court case from both sides. This year's case is criminal. The defendant, Allyn Funt, is accused of involuntary manslaughter.
Team members must play parts on both the prosecution and defense sides of the case. They learn correct protocol for courtroom behavior and have to be prepared to be challenged by the opposing team. Witnesses learn detailed statements. In this case the detailed statements include two doctors who testify about the physical processes a body goes through when it is scared to death.
The team has a week and a half to further refine and polish their performances and arguments before taking part in the state competition in Des Moines.
