OTHO - A 16-year-old boy from Otho is facing a felony sexual abuse charge after he allegedly assaulted a young child.
Philip O. Chavez Jr., 16, of Otho, has been charged with one count of second-degree sexual abuse.
Chavez is accused of sexually assaulting a child, identified in court documents as being "under the age of 12," on Saturday. The gender and specific age of the child are not being revealed by the Webster County attorney's office.
Chavez has been charged as an adult in the case.
He made his initial appearance in Webster County Magistrate Court Wednesday morning. Chavez, who was in handcuffs, appeared in person in front of Magistrate William Thatcher.
Thatcher followed the recommendation of Assistant Webster County Attorney Joseph Tofilon and ordered Chavez held on $25,000 bond.
"We believe he poses a danger to the community," Tofilon said.
Because he's a juvenile, Chavez will be held at Central Iowa Juvenile Detention in Eldora instead of the Webster County Jail.
In addition to setting bond, Thatcher also scheduled Chavez's preliminary hearing for Nov. 1.
