Nationally recognized building expert Bob Yapp will present a free workshop on the energy efficiency of historic windows today in Fort Dodge.
"Old Windows Aren't a Pane - They are a Goldmine" will be presented from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Iowa Central Community College East Campus, 2031 Quail Ave.
Yapp has been training owners, contractors and architects in historic preservation for more than 30 years. He wrote, produced and hosted "About Your House with Bob Yapp" on PBS and has been involved in 163 rehabilitations, restoring more than 6,000 windows.
Today's workshop is the second in a series of three being held in Fort Dodge.
"At the first workshop we had nearly 25 in attendance," said Stephanie Houk Sheetz, senior planner with the Fort Dodge Department of Business Affairs and Community Growth. "They heard a great presentation by Bill McAnally that focused on energy efficiency measures that can be taken in a home or building. There was a lot of discussion about insulation types and appropriate installation.
"Most of this group has signed up to attend the next two workshops, so we are excited that folks have felt this was so good that they want to learn more - and learn about how to improve existing windows, rather than pay the high cost to replace them, " she said.

On Saturday, Yapp will conduct a hands-on mini-boot camp at the McQuilkin Building, 815 Central Ave. He will walk participants through the condition assessment, restoration and weatherization process for a double-hung window. However, preregistration was required, and Houk Sheetz said that workshop has already reached its capacity.
