Iowa Central Community College will present "John Lennon and Me!" at 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Decker Auditorium.
The play is told from the perspective of a young teenage girl who has suffered from cystic fibrosis most of her life. But instead of only seeing her illness, the audience can also see her extraordinary spirit, said Director Teresa Jackson.
"It's such an unusual show, unlike any I have directed," Jackson said. "I absolutely love good playwriting, and that describes Cherie Bennett beautifully. I love her story and how gently and creatively she tells it. What seems like a somber subject matter is actually told with joy, flair and hope."
Iowa Central Community College will present its fall play, “John Lennon and Me!” on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Decker Auditorium. Among the cast are, from left, Caleb Henkleman, Tara Jackson, Dakota Demery and Emily Garst.
The play takes place in Heart House, a home for kids which is attached to a hospital, where Star has lived most of her life. She confronts her illness with flair-by surrounding herself with MTV-inspired bodyguard Flunkies, and by challenging her therapy nurse to boxing matches and dance contests.
"However, when Star gets a new roommate, a vivacious cheerleader who seems quite healthy, well, it becomes a friendship that changes her world," she said.
The script incorporates music, Jackson said, and also allows directors to choose appropriate songs.
