ROCKWELL CITY - A funeral service for Rockwell City Police Officer Jamie Buenting will be at 2 p.m. today at the South Central Calhoun Middle School, 1000 Tonawanda Ave. in Rockwell City.

Buenting, an eight-year veteran of the Rockwell City Police Department, died early Sept. 13 as he and other law enforcement officers attempted to go inside a house to arrest Corey Trott, 32, who was wanted on an outstanding warrant for assault.

Members of the public wanting to attend the funeral should approach the school from the east and park in the east parking lot, according to a press release by the city of Rockwell City. Overflow public parking will be in the residential area to the east of the school.

The graveside ceremony will be at Rosehill Cemetery. Public parking will be across the street off of East High Street. The funeral procession following the service will be for law enforcement only.

Buenting leaves behind a wife and two young children. He is the first Iowa police officer killed in the line of duty since September 2011.

A complaint filed with Calhoun County District Court said Buenting was within a few feet of the house when Trott fired a single shot from a .233 caliber rifle, Trott surrendered to authorities a few hours later.

Trott faces a first-degree murder charge and is currently at the Sac County Jail.

Trott told authorities in an interview that he knowingly fired the rifle at a police officer, according to the complaint.

Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad also ordered flags to be lowered to half-staff today in honor of Buenting.
