Dr. Terry Moehnke, an optometrist who led the effort to create Veterans Memorial Park near Badger Lake, is running for the Fort Dodge City Council.
Moehnke, of 222 Crestview Drive, is seeking the Ward 1 seat. Councilman Mark Taylor, who is seeking his second term, is the only other candidate for that seat so far.
Ward 1 includes western and northwestern Fort Dodge, Pleasant Valley and much of downtown.
Moehnke is a native of Rochester, Minn., who grew up in Sioux Falls, S.D. He is a Navy veteran.
The candidate earned his optometry degree from Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tenn. He also has a master's degree in clinical vision research from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
He is a member of the Fort Dodge Noon Sertoma Club, and received the 2008-2009 National Sertoman of the Year award in part for his work to develop Veterans Memorial Park.
''I support the revitalization of the downtown, working with corporate and volunteer organizations to preserve and improve our city parks and creating a safe environment for our families to thrive,'' Moehnke said in a written statement announcing his candidacy.
