Helen Underberg Pfaff, age 86, passed away on July 25, 2013 from pneumonia. She was born on November 25, 1926 in Bode, Iowa to Carl and Henrietta Underberg. Helen graduated from high school in Livermore, Iowa in 1944. She entered nurses training at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, graduating as a registered nurse in 1947. She worked as a nurse in hospitals in Fort Dodge, Iowa, and Iowa City, Iowa, the latter while her husband attended law school.
Helen married Robert Pfaff on September 3, 1950, in Bode, Iowa. When he finished law school they moved to Evanston, Illinois, where Robert practiced law in Chicago. He retired in 1986 and they bought a winter home at Grenelefe, near Haines City, Florida. They maintained a summer home in Evanston and, until recently, returned every summer.
She is survived by Robert, her husband of 62 years and their four children: Ned F. Pfaff, Chicago, IL; Sonja Lee Lovelace (Tim), Northfield, IL; William R. Pfaff (Angela), Naperville, IL; Paul R. Pfaff (Beth), Northbrook, IL, as well as five grandchildren, John, Alison, Bennett, Emma and Chad. She is also survived by a brother, Kenneth Underberg, Livermore, IA, and a sister, Iola Foley, Houston, TX. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings: Ted, Marie, George, Lillie, Joseph, Irwin and Alpha.
Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society.
