It took defending champion Treynor a few extra innings, but the Cardinals survived a Class 2A state quarterfinal encounter with Iowa City Regina, 3-2 in 11 innings.
No. 2 Treynor (29-5 overall) will face eighth-ranked AGWSR (28-7) on Thursday at 1 p.m. on Diamond 1 at Rogers Park.
After plating two runs in the first, the Cardinals were held in-check by the upstart Regals (20-20) through nine innings. Finally, in the 11th, Laura Hempel singled and moved to third on another base hit by Lexi Rogers.

The ball got away from the Regina defense, allowing Hempel to score. Treynor features seven starters from last year, including all-state pitcher Madison Keysor, who recorded nine strikeouts and scattered eight hits.
"I have all the confidence in our hitters," Keysor said. "I just knew that we would get a ball to drop. We kept saying in the dugout that there was no way we came this far to die now."
Regina tied things up in the third off a home run by Meg Bonnett, but left runners in scoring position several times. They will now compete Wednesday in the consolation bracket.
