DAYTON - More than just the yearly rodeo takes place on the Dayton Rodeo Fairgrounds.
The Dayton Wranglers Saddle Club will hold a team penning event there at 5 p.m. Saturday, and a ranch rodeo at 1 p.m. July 28. Admission is free.
The club holds events there throughout the summer, said club member Misty Mackay.
The ranch rodeo has five timed events to demonstrate the skills needed on a ranch, Mackay said. There are 16 possible events, and the five are chosen the day of the rodeo.
Team penning events include a 5-on-1 sort, where the participant has to move steers into a proper order.
Both events happen once every month, Mackay said. There are also working ranch horse events.
"We basically work the cow, and also do a reining pattern, which is basically we do a lot of different things to show we've worked with our horses," Mackay said.
She hopes families will see what they do and become interested.
"We're trying to make this a little bit bigger," she said. "We really want to get the youth out to see there's a lot to do with your horses."
