CLEAR LAKE - Any faint hopes of winning an outright North Central Conference title slipped away for the St. Edmond softball team Wednesday afternoon.
In a makeup league game, the No. 6 (Class 2A) Gaels (22-8 overall, 14-3 in the league) dropped a 3-2 decision to Clear Lake.
Sara Barlow hit a walkoff RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning for the Lions (8-15, 5-10), who avenged an earlier 12-1 five-inning setback.
"When you give up three runs, and none of them are earned, that's a recipe for a scary day," said SEHS head coach Paul Hunt. "We were a little bit out of our element in that we thought the game was scheduled for 3 instead of 1:30, so we got right off the bus and played.
"We came out tight and it showed."
Sophomore Jaci Stumpf and eighth-grader Maggie Harvey collected two hits a piece for St. Edmond, which saw its three-game victory streak snapped.

Katie Donnelly and Maggie Harvey; Sara Barlow and Hannah Bartlett.
2B-SE: Harvey, Jessica Kuebler.
Harvey and Jessica Kuebler both recorded doubles, while Kuebler and Katie Donnelly each drove in a run.
Donnelly (14-6) went the distance, allowing just three hits. She didn't walk a batter and fanned six.
"Clear Lake's a program that is headed in the right direction," Hunt said. "Their new coaches have done a great job this year. I don't think it'll be long before they're in the conversation for a spot at the top of the conference."
The Gaels close out their regular season Friday at Clarion-Goldfield.
