Tonight's fireworks display will have an impact on local traffic, and Police Chief Tim Carmody has asked that everybody be mindful of the impacted streets.
Starting around 5:30 tonight, the following streets will be closed for the fireworks display;
- First Street, from the west entrance to Sunkist Meadows to the Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica Inc. Riverside Plant entrance
- Central Avenue from First Street to Third Street
- Central Avenue from Third Street, around the city square and through Sixth Street.
- Trail system along the east side of the Des Moines River from Kenyon Road north to the BIVI Riverside Plant.
In addition, the Karl King Viaduct will be closed in both directions starting around 9:30 p.m.
All streets are expected to reopen around 10:30.
Carmody added that there will be no eastbound traffic allowed after the event until the traffic from the area clears. He also asked that community members try to avoid Third Street as much as possible.
The Fort Dodge Police Department, Fort Dodge/Webster County Reserves and Iowa State Patrol will be on foot and conducting traffic control during the event.
"Our primary goal is to provide a safe environment for family and friends to celebrate our Independence Day," Carmody said. "We want to thank you in advance for the support, patience and cooperation of all those in attendance and those who happen to be traveling in the area."
