Ranked No. 8 in the latest Class 5A poll, the Fort Dodge softball team put on a clinic of precise offensive execution here Friday night at its own invitational.

In the tournament quarterfinals - which saw the first pitch pushed back nearly two hours due to inclement weather conditions - the opportunistic Dodgers (14-4 overall) rolled past intra-city rival and fourth-ranked (2A) St. Edmond by a 14-2 count in five innings.

"We came out fired up and made things happen, which is exactly what we need to be doing," FDSH head coach Andi Adams said. "I was just very proud of my girls for the aggressiveness they played with (yesterday). We did all the little things well."

FDSH managed at least one run in every inning, including four scores in both the first and second frames. The Dodgers also erupted for a season-high 17 hits, with seven of those going for extra bases.

Junior Lexi Astor, a center fielder and leadoff batter, went a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs scored, two stolen bases and a RBI.

Maddie Egli, Becca Sunken and Cassie Tjebben all collected three hits, while Mallory Kilian and Taylor Messerly added two hits a piece.

Kilian and Egli both drove in three, and Toryn Pederson crossed the dish three times. Sunken and Tjebben each came home twice.

Kilian (8-2) went the distance in the win, allowing just one hit and no earned runs. She walked four and fanned six, firing 52 of her 78 pitches for strikes.

The sophomore also helped her own cause at the plate with a one-out solo longball to deep left field in the top of the first - her fifth of the year and ninth of her career.

"Mallory just had a great game all the way around, and she's very confident at the plate right now," said Adams. "Becca also stepped up for us and did what she's capable of. We received contributions from a lot of different people in our lineup."

Jaci Stumpf's two-out double to left-center in the third was the lone hit for the Gaels (13-3), who saw their seven-game victory streak halted. Stumpf and Anna Yung later scored the only SEHS runs on a fielding error by the Dodger first baseman.

Amanda Lansman (4-1) suffered the loss in the circle.

"We came out a little tight, which I didn't think we would," St. Edmond head coach Paul Hunt said. "This was a great measuring stick, though, and kind of lets us know what we still need to work on. Give credit to Mallory for throwing a great game."

Winners of three straight games, Fort Dodge will now face defending state champion and No. 6 (5A) Ankeny (11-4) - weather permitting - in the tournament semifinals this afternoon at 3 p.m. on Diamond 1. St. Edmond will take on second-ranked (2A) North Union (15-1) in consolation action at 11 a.m. on Diamond 2.

Dodgers drub SC?East

Fort Dodge rose to the occasion late in a 8-2 six-inning victory over Sioux City East in its tournament opener Friday at Rogers Sports Complex.

Leading by the slimmest of margins in the bottom of the fifth inning, the No. 8 (Class 5A) Dodgers (13-4 overall) pulled away behind a six-run outburst.

Senior Taylor Messerly and junior Lexi Astor each reached base four times for FDSH. Messerly went 2-for-2, while Astor delivered a single, RBI, two stolen bases and two runs scored. Mallory Kilian, a sophomore, added a double and three RBI.

Cassie Tjebben (6-1) went the distance in the win, scattering six hits and one earned run. She walked none and fanned one.

Rylie Zyzda finished 3-for-3 for the Black Raiders (6-17), while Haley Steele contributed a double.

Gaels knock off Sioux City Heelan

No. 4 (Class 2A) St. Edmond earned payback in its tournament opener at the Fort Dodge Invitational Friday at Rogers Sports Complex.

The Gael softball team (13-2 overall) avenged an earlier loss to Sioux City Heelan with a 9-3 five-inning triumph this time around.

Maggie Harvey, Allie Oberg, Amanda Lansman and Cassie Sells all went 2-for-2 offensively.

Lansman (4-1) notched the win in relief.
