Benefit Walk succeeds

To the editor:

A huge thank you goes to all the walkers, skaters and volunteers who participated in the Opportunity Village Benefit Walk despite the snow earlier in the week. Snow still covered most of the trail Saturday morning, but all were faithful to the cause; on Sunday, May 5, the Fort Dodge area raised about $9,300 toward the grand total of nearly $131,000 to support Opportunity Village services to people with disabilities throughout northern Iowa. This was the third annual Benefit Walk for our area. May 5 was the 44th Annual Opportunity Village Benefit Walk in Clear Lake.

Thank you to the RSVP volunteers, who along with Northwoods Living and other Opportunity Village volunteers, made sure that walkers and skaters stayed hydrated along the trail and got their buttons marked.

Also thanks to the Webster County Sheriff Reserve deputies, who ensured the safety of those not only crossing Webster County Road P56 in two locations but also elsewhere on the 15th Street Trail. Your patrolling was greatly appreciated.

Every sponsor who cared enough to help us "be the change we wish to see" also gets a heart-felt thank you. Most of the walkers were staff, clients, and family members who know how important it is for Opportunity Village to accomplish its mission of excellence in service to individuals. The money raised isn't spent for "extras" but the nuts and bolts operating budget of providing quality services to people with mental retardation, mental illness, brain injury and other disabilities. Some services would not be possible without such donations.

Thanks to the great support of the many individuals, businesses and other organizations throughout the area, we can make a difference. But we couldn't do it without you.
