A new location for Community Christian School and the debut of a new temporary home for single women who have completed treatment for various addictions were approved by the Fort Dodge Board of Adjustment Tuesday.
The board unanimously approved the special exceptions requested by the school, which is moving to the former Holy Rosary School, and Gateway to Discovery Inc., which will operate the women's lodging house on South 17th Street.
Community Christian School
Community Christian School, now located at 3058 10th Ave. N., is buying the Holy Rosary property at 2406 9 1/2 Ave. S. from Youth Shelter Care of Fort Dodge.
The building, which served as a Catholic church and school, was constructed in 1952. The last Mass was held there in 2008. The building was subsequently bought by Youth Shelter Care.
Although the property served as a school for decades, a special exception was still required to open a new educational facility there because it is in an area zoned for single family homes.
Community Christian School has 50 students in kindergarten through eighth grade and 35 students in preschool.
School leaders launched a campaign this spring to raise $400,000 to purchase the building. They plan to move the school into its new site this summer.
Gateway to Discovery
Gateway to Discovery is a non-profit organization established in July 2012. It plans to open the lodging house at 701 S. 17th St. this fall.
It will initially be home to five women. A maximum of 12 women will live there.
Chris Helton, the vice president of the group's board of directors, said the women will be moving there after being discharged from inpatient treatment programs. He said they will live there for two years while they readjust to daily life.
Helton said the Gateway to Discovery program is for single women without children. He said there is no similar program for single women without children in Fort Dodge.
The women will receive housing, food, therapy, education and job training at no cost.
The house has four bedrooms. It was built in 1920, according to online records of the Webster County assessor's office.
