Gaels lose tight decision to Bobcats

IOWA FALLS - Unable to overcome a rocky start, the St. Edmond softball team dropped a 5-4 decision to Iowa Falls-Alden Monday night.

Jaci Stumpf, Anna Yung, Maggie Harvey and Allie Oberg all contributed two hits for the No. 6 (Class 2A) Gaels (6-2 overall, 2-1 North Central Conference), who committed five costly errors - with four of those coming in the bottom of the first inning.

"We didn't come out ready to play and threw the ball around in the first inning," said SEHS head coach Paul Hunt. "After the first inning, though, we played a really good ballgame. I felt like our hitters did a great job up and down the order, but we just didn't get the lucky breaks we needed. (IF-A's) right fielder (Brittney) Hammond ended the game with a great diving catch when we had runners on first and second base."

Katie Donnelly (3-2) went the distance in the loss, allowing just three hits with no walks and seven strikeouts.

With the victory, the ninth-ranked (3A) Cadets improved to 5-1 and 2-0 on the season.

"(Defending NCC champion) Iowa Falls is a tough team that definitely earned their ranking," Hunt said. "We're now looking forward to our next battle with them (SEHS hosts the Cadets on June 12)."
