LAURENS - Over the past few months a conversation has been circulating among the churches of Laurens. It's not about differences in theology or sacrament. Instead, it's about how to better serve the preteen and teenage students of their community.
The result is the formation of the city's first Community Youth Group. In a partnership amongst the majority of the congregations, a newly-formed Youth Committee has begun dreaming and planning for this new project which will launch in September.
"I think that this is really what doing God's work is all about. We're looking past the denominational lines that separate us from time to time and we are coming together to rally around one common purpose: providing our students with a space in which they can regularly encounter God and have some fun while they do it," said the Rev. Tyler Whipkey of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
While some details remain to be finalized, the group is hopeful that they will be able to hire a part-time youth director.
"We really would like to find someone locally to fill this spot if we can," Whipkey said. "We are looking for someone with a passion for youth, someone grounded in their faith, and someone who doesn't have a problem working across denominational lines."
If you know anyone who might fit this description of a qualified candidate, you can contact Whipkey at the First Christian Church, 324 West Section Line Road, Laurens, call (712) 358-2016 or email email@example.com.
