JOHN ANDREW CONWAY

HARVARD, Neb. - John Andrew Conway, age 89 years and 361 days of Harvard, NE, passed away on Saturday, April 27, 2013 at Harvard Rest Haven in Harvard. He was born on May 1, 1923 in Claire, IA to Mr. Edward Aloysius Conway and Bernadett Kay (McKernon) Conway. John played basketball during his high school days at Sacred Heart Catholic School in Fort Dodge, IA. After graduation, John honorably served his country in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific theatre during WWII; he returned home after four years of duty in 1945. In 1946, he married Shirleyanne Messbach in St. Paul, NE and they had two children, Kathleen and David Michael. After that marriage ended, John found the love of his life, Mildred "Millie" Campbell Cantrell, and they were married in March 12, 1967 in Kearney, NE. John and Millie had five children, Kendell, Bryan, Charles, Angelia, and Alicia. In earlier times, John enjoyed playing snare and base drums in the York Drum and Bugle Corps, riding motorcycles, playing golf, and dancing with Millie at the Legion Club on many a Saturday night. More than anything else in his life, John treasured his family and the times when all could be together with him.

John worked in Fosters Dry Cleaning and Tonniges in York, NE after the war, followed by a career with Champion Mobil Homes in York, Lindsay, CA, and Commerce, TX. While in York, he ran for mayor of the city. John returned to Nebraska where he owned and operated Geneva Sanitation. Upon retirement he and Millie moved to Colorado and later returned to Nebraska.

John is survived by all 7 of his children, Kathleen and spouse Randy Carson of Ingram, TX, David and Cathy of Durant, OK, Kendell and Becky of Hastings, NE, Bryan and Carol of Utica, NE, Charles and Roberta of Harvard, NE, Angelia and Kyle Tweedy of Fort Scott, KS, and Alicia Snyder of McCook, NE; 21 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, infant son, two brothers, one sister, and his precious Lil'Bit toy poodle. John was the last surviving member of his WWII platoon.

According to his wishes, John has been cremated. Military graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, May 18, 2013 at York's Greenwood Cemetery. His family will be present at Metz Mortuary to greet friends and family from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., prior to the graveside. Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation.
