To the editor:
The heart cannot control who it falls in love with. I have gay friends who have been together for over 25 years. These couples should have the same rights and responsibilities as a couple in a traditional marriage. My objection to the "same-sex marriage" issue is using the term "marriage" to describe the union. The traditional definition of a marriage is a union between a man and a woman.
The term heterosexual would never be redefined to include homosexuals, nor would straight be redefined to include gays. Do not redefine marriage to include same-sex unions. The gay community has come up with many terms describing their lifestyle, now is the time to find a word for a same-sex union to be used in equality with marriage.
I realize this is a very simplistic approach, but by using this idea there may be a basis for negotiation to help reach agreements. There are two issues here, the definition of marriage and equal rights for same-sex couples. Separate the issues and work for solutions. The far left and the far right will never agree, but maybe those in between can get enough support to come to terms.
