FARNHAMVILLE - A building that served as the community center for the apartment complex in Farnhamville was heavily damaged during an early morning fire Monday.

No one was injured, according to Fire Chief Jay Anderson. He said residents of one apartment building were evacuated, but were able to return home after a few hours.

The blaze at the complex on Farnham Avenue was reported at about 4 a.m.

''The fire was through the roof before anyone called the Fire Department,'' Anderson said.

''The damage is extensive,'' he added. ''The entire roof is burned off of the facility.''

Anderson said efforts to fight the blaze were made more difficult by cold wind and ice.

The fire began in the building's utility room, according to the fire chief. Its cause remains under investigation.

The building housed a meeting room, kitchen and laundry room.

Firefighters from Gowrie and Lohrville, along with Calhoun County sheriff's deputies, assisted Farnhamville firefighters. Emergency personnel were on the scene for about three hours.
