It’s time for It’s time for Bets for Pets

We would like to thank our supporters who have so generously given their time, monetary donations and supplies to keep our 2-year-old beautiful shelter up and running until now. We still need your help in order to continue to house, care for and adopt out homeless animal.

The fifth annual "Bets For Pets" FurBall will be held Saturday. This event will again be held at the beautiful Fort Dodge Ford Toyota showroom from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Enjoy casual attire, complimentary appetizers, cash bar, Snus Hill Wine, dancing and music by MOJO Productions and casino games, as well as live and silent auctions.

An average of 800 people attend this event each year, making it one of Fort Dodge's most successful charitable events. This year promises to be just as spectacular, and a great way to have a relaxing, fun evening out to support an exceptional cause, our area homeless pets.

We already offer dog boarding, and in 2013 you will see that we will be opening our on-site public dog park, as well as other positive improvements to Almost Home. We have re-established our relationship with Iowa State University. With the help of ISU and our local veterinarians, we will be that much closer to our goal of each animal adopted through Almost Home being spayed or neutered before they leave our facility.

Almost Home is a no-kill facility, which means that each pet we care for will stay at our facility until their ideal home is found. Some animals are adopted out quickly, while others take a bit longer to find their forever home. This year, we were able to place Della, a pitbull mix, who had lived at Almost Home for the majority of her two years of life. We were also able to provide medical care, through sponsorships, for a heartworm positive boxer - Michelle - and a 4-month-old Chihuahua mix- Lola - that had a severe case of mange, bacterial infections, and double ear and eye infections. Both dogs are now in loving homes, and continue to regain their health. Without the support of our community, we would not have been able to help these dogs to the extent that we did.

Della, Michelle and Lola are just three of the pets that have relied on donations, volunteers and our community's support. But our work never ends, for as they leave our facility, there's always another one waiting to come in and take their place.

Tickets are available for $15 a person or $25 per couple in advance at Fort Dodge Ford Lincoln Toyota, Clarice's Fashions in the Crossroads Mall, Earl May Garden Center, Hy-Vee, Holm Animal Hospital, East Lawn Animal Hospital, Crave Tattoo and Family Pet Medical Center. Or you can purchase tickets at the door for $20 per person.

We hope to see you at the fifth annual FurBall "Bets For Pets" at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Renee Drown is director of the Almost Home Animal Shelter.
