Deputies warn of check fraud

EMMETSBURG - Deputies are asking businesses to be aware of check fraud after a local business became the victim of a scam.

According to a statement from the Palo Alto County Sheriff's Office, an unidentified local business attempted to cash a Bank of America payroll check. However, when the check was taken to the bank, it was discovered the check was from a closed account from a business in Maryland.

Investigators found the Annapolis, Maryland Police Department and other agencies have been looking into other incidents involving the same account.

"The Palo Alto County Sheriff's Office encourages all local banks and businesses that cash checks to take precautions when cashing any check," the press release stated.

The sheriff's office suggested using photo identification, phone number and driver's license information. Investigators also recommended if there was any suspicion about a check to call local law enforcement.
