A farm management company won permission Tuesday to have some parking spaces on the property of its Fort Dodge office.
The city's Board of Adjustment gave Sunderman Farm Management Co. a variance allowing the five or six parking spaces on the east side of its building at 1309 First Ave. S.
The variance was needed because city law requires a business to have a 100-foot wide lot before parking can be allowed in a side yard. The Sunderman Farm Management property is 92.3 feet wide, Brent Larson, the company's vice president, told the board Tuesday.
''We want to be in compliance,'' he said. ''This is the only option that will come close to any compliance.''
Board member Steve Hoesel said the property was laid out before the city had zoning laws. He said that means the problem the firm is trying to deal was created long before it owned the property. He added that awarding the variance doesn't give the company any rights or privileges that owners of surrounding properties do not have.
Board Chairwoman Susan Hayden abstained from the otherwise unanimous vote to award the variance. She said she abstained because she is a friend of the business owners.
