Herzberg, Maneman first team all-state

SE's Yung makes third squad

A total of five Messenger-area girls basketball players were selected to the 2013 INA all-state teams, which were announced on Monday.

Renee Maneman was picked to the Class 1A top squad for state runner-up Newell-Fonda, while teammate Andrea Christensen landed on the third team.

Manson Northwest Webster's Ellie Herzberg made the 2A top squad. Anna Yung of St. Edmond was also tabbed to the 2A third team.

In 3A, South Central Calhoun's Haley Birks was nominated to the third squad.

Maneman, a 5-foot-5 junior, led the co-Twin Lakes Conference champion Mustangs in total points (470), assists (149) and steals (94), while shooting 50.5 percent (184-for-364) from the field and 74.7 (56 of 75) at the charity stripe.

Christensen scored 295 points and grabbed 108 rebounds. The 5-foot-10 senior connected on 56.9 (119-for-209) of her attempts from the floor.

Herzberg, a University of Northern Iowa recruit, anchored the co-Twin Lakes Conference champion Cougars in total points (614), made free-throws (95), three-pointers (31), field goals (244), rebounds (173), steals (142), assists (103) and blocks (21). The 5-foot-9 junior ranked first in 2A and second in the state in scoring at 25.6 points per game.

Yung spearheaded the co-North Central Conference champion Gaels in scoring (14.4), total points (317), field goals (124) and three-pointers (21). The 5-foot-8 sophomore guard added 5.5 boards, 4.5 assists and 3.0 steals a night.

Birks, a 6-foot-0 sophomore, tallied a team-high 363 points, 64 free-throws, 39 three-pointers, 138 rebounds, 73 steals and 39 blocks.

Ally Disterhoft from 5A state quarterfinalist Iowa City West was voted as Iowa's Miss Basketball. Disterhoft, a 6-foot-0 guard, led the state in scoring (26.3). The University of Iowa signee shot 47 percent from outside the arc and 64 percent overall. She made 130 of 161 (80.7) free-throw attempts and collected 185 rebounds and 51 assists. For her career, the four-year starter finished with 1,590 points and 407 boards.
